Bupropion belongs to a category of medications known as norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors. It is an antidepressant and is used for two purposes. One, to prevent depression, and two, to help with smoking cessation. Although Bupropion is a very effective medication as standalone, it is sometimes combined with other medications when it comes to treating depression.
About Bupropion
Bupropion is metabolized in the liver and it has the ability to selectability inhibit both dopamine and norepinephrine uptake. Bupropion is different from other antidepressants in the sense that most other antidepressants exhibit their properties through selective serotonin reuptake inhibition. As for smoking cessation, Bupropion helps in that regard by blocking the receptors where nicotine usually attaches. This is known as being an antagonist at the nicotine receptor.
Recommended dosage
This medication is available in two forms: extended-release and immediate release. The extended-release version is much more popular.
For the immediate release:
- Starting dose: 200mg per day, split into 2 doses.
- Maintenance dose: 300mg per day, split into 2 doses.
- Maximum dose: 450mg per day, divided into 3 doses per day.
For the Extended Release:
- Starting dose: 150mg per day
- Maintenance dose: 300mg per day. Doses exceeding 300mg per day are usually not used.
